there is no music without music education

Prior to shifting towards a composition-focused career, I spent 3 years in the K-12 public education field. In addition, I have 2 years of teaching experience at the collegiate level and 8 years of experience as a private lessons instructor. My music education experience spans from music composition and theory to band and general music.

Young Composers Project

The Young Composers Project is a collaborative project between the North Carolina NewMusic Initiative, ECU Lab School, and Pitt County Public Schools.  This project implements a 6-week curriculum that synthesizes basic music skills, teamwork, critical thinking, and creative and conceptual thought to yield an original piece of music.  Depending on the nature of the piece students choose to compose, during this time, students learn how to use music notation software, digital audio workstations, or MaxMSP. Designed for 3-6 grade students, the project helps students learn music through creation.

Education Focused Composition

Composer/performer collaboration is the cornerstone of music-making and should be reflected in music education. Education-focused compositions and commissioning projects allow students to participate in the commission process. These projects foster collaboration between educators and composers that addresses the pedagogical needs of student performers and creates opportunities for cross-curricular and interdisciplinary learning.
