Where We Belong is a site-specific interactive installation designed for the Swing Set: Share a Share sculpture (Leticia Banjuyo) at Josephine Sculpture Park. The piece is inspired by the strong sense of community and fortitude that emanates throughout Lexington, KY. Ten tracks consisting either of melodic synths or drum machines are played on individual tape players dispersed around the sculpture. While each tape can function on its own, the beauty is in the combining of all the tapes to create a tapestry of sound. In the center of the sculpture, voice recordings of local Lexington community members describing the communities and land around Lexington that means most to them is played alongside the tapes. Audience members are invited to press play and stop on tapes at will and experience the piece inside the sculpture, on the swings of the sculpture, or outside the sculpture. Each listening position provides a slightly different listening experience, inviting audience members to experience the piece and the sculpture in a new way.
